St Mary's Loch open meeting St Marys Loch Sailing Club

2023 Scottish Series at St Mary's Loch Sailing Club

by Veronica Falat

There were only 3 boats competing in the St Mary's Loch Streaker open but the event was certainly not short of excitement! It was a glorious sunny day and conditions seemed quite benign as we rigged up but people who approached the club from the north along the road beside the loch reported seeing big gusts on the water - and they weren't wrong!

This was a joint Laser and Streaker event and the Lasers started 5 minutes ahead of us. This gave us a chance to see how tricky the racing was going to be - and before long we were passing capsized lasers! 18 Lasers started their first race, 13 started their second, 7 their 3rd and just 5 sailed their final race. Meanwhile all 3 of us Streakers completed three races without mishap - and then decided to skip the final race, which was a simple decision to make as Jim Sinclair had won all the races so far! He was super fast in the wild conditions and made it look easy, while Veronica Falat and Katie Masterson followed at a considerable distance.

It wasn't that the wind was strong all the time but the gusts were huge, rushing down the hillsides and fanning out as they hit the water. This made it not only gusty but very shifty so you really had to be ready for anything!

Thank you St Mary's Loch SC for a really fun and memorable day!
