Hickling Spring Regatta Hickling Broad Sailing Club

A chilly north-westerly force 5, greeted the competitors for the first day of Hickling Broad's Spring Regatta.

Slightly delayed, the first race saw four Streakers join a mixed fleet, including Norfolk Punts.

Veronica Falat, Jon Blankley and newcomer Pete Matthews, all made good starts whilst Mark Langston got clipped from behind by a Topper boom and then sailed over by one of the impressive Norfolk Punts. Mark had to tack away to get clear of the resultant bad air and managed to move up to third Streaker by the windward mark.  Veronica kept the lead with Pete chasing hard. Positions never really changed for the remainder, with Mark and Jon, third and fourth respectively.

After a good 30 mins of waiting in the stiffening winds for the next race to get started, the fleet headed in for further instruction. Shortly after, the fleet set out again without Jonathan, who sensibly elected to bask in the limited sunshine to warm up.

The second race got away without hitch, Veronica taking the initiative once again with Mark chasing hard round the first mark. The gybe at the clubhouse buoy, saw Veronica slow down as she found the weed which allowed Mark to pass on the run and up to the reach. By the start of the next round, Veronica had cleared the weed from her foils and managed to catch and pass Mark who was having his own problems with weed. Positions stayed this way until the end, with frequent lifting of the boards. Pete capsized repeatedly in the cold winds but managed to recover to finish third.

During lunch, the decision was taken to pack the boats away as everybody was struggling with the cold and the conditions.
