Northern Championships Welton Sailing Club

Saturday 12th was bright and blustery with a 15 mph wind gusting into the 20’s.
There were 21 boats on the water including 9 locals.
Race 1
The first race saw Jasper Barnham in the lead closely followed by Giles Therkelson-Smith. Tom Gillard had a disastrous double capsize very early in the race but recovered very rapidly.
After 3 laps Jasper was still in the lead followed by Steve Blackburn. Tom moved into 3rd place.
Jasper finished the race in first place closely followed by Tom in second and Steve in third place.
Race 2
The beginning of lap 2 saw Tom in the lead followed by Giles and Richard Brameld.
The racing was very close, two boats capsized at the first gybe mark in the second lap causing many following boats to swerve in order to avoid collision.
At the beginning of the third lap, Tom was first round the upwind mark followed by Jasper, Phil Manning and then Steve Blackburn.
Tom opened up a commanding lead and crossed the line in first place a full 2 ½ minutes ahead. Jasper took second place and Phil third.
Race 3
The wind increased before the start of the third race.
Dave Butler had the best start. At the end of the first leg Jasper was in the lead followed by Richard Brameld and Tom Gillard. There were two capsizes early in the race then John Willars retired with a broken gooseneck, Giles and Richard Wharram retired with broken booms.
Tom finished in first place and so was the overall winner, Jasper finished second and Steve Blackburn third.
Prizes were awarded to the first six boats overall.
