Near perfect conditions, with F3 offshore winds and sunshine greeted a fairly exclusive group of Streakers for the Newhaven & Seaford SC open. The three entries joined the general handicap fleet of the clubs Regatta, which was being run at the same time. With Covid concerns keeping the visitor numbers low, the racing was made more interesting by mixing it with not only monohulls, but a lot of close quarters action with a bunch from the clubs Cat fleet. The first race was run over a compact ‘P’ shaped course. First to the windward mark was Rupert Smith, in front of the chasing handicap fleet. Along the first reach he managed to capsize to windward allowing Matt Whitfield from Tamworth SC and Phil Haldron from Downs SC to come past in the melee of Lasers and Radials. Phil chased hard, but Matt eventually held on to the lead. Race two was over a larger course, with Rupert again getting away well at the start and holding the lead from Matt & Phil for the next 2 ½ laps, when a large gust brought the fleet together on a broad reach, allowing Matt & Phil to pass Rupert. The final beat saw Rupert manage to creep past Phil, with Matt taking his second win of the day. The third race was lead from the start by Rupert, with Matt & Phil chasing through the handicap fleet. No place changes happened during the rest of the race with a consolation first place going to Rupert. Thanks to Matt Whitfield and Phil Haldron for making the journey. Hopefully we can welcome a few more Streakers back next year. |
